Washington, DC, July 06, 2026 National Security Leaders for America (NSL4A) is deeply concerned by the forced departure of General Christopher T. Donahue after only 18 months as Commanding General of U.S. Army Europe and Africa—and by the decision to reduce this strategically vital headquarters from a four-star to a three-star command.
General Donahue is a highly respected, combat-tested leader who previously commanded special operations forces, the 82nd Airborne Division, and XVIII Airborne Corps. As commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa and NATO’s Allied Land Command, he strengthened allied integration and deterrence while preparing forces for a rapidly changing battlefield.
NSL4A Founder and President, Retired Navy Rear Admiral Michael Smith, reiterated the organization’s position from its June 2 statement on merit-based military promotions: “The forced departure of one of the Army’s most accomplished leaders, together with the reduction of this critical command, demands a clear explanation. Senior military personnel decisions must be grounded in performance, qualifications, leadership, character, and mission requirements—not ideology, discrimination, personal preference, or political loyalty. Decisions of this consequence must serve legitimate military requirements and the national interest. General Donahue’s departure deepens our concerns about the politicization of military leadership.”
We call on Congress to examine the circumstances surrounding General Donahue’s departure and require the Department of Defense to explain the military rationale for downgrading U.S. Army Europe and Africa. Congress should also assess the effects on NATO integration, deterrence, operational readiness, and American influence across both regions.
At a time of profound global instability, America cannot afford to discard proven leadership or weaken a critical command without a compelling national-security justification. Our allies and adversaries are watching. So are the Americans who serve.
